“I wanted to prove to people that no matter what you go through in life, you can still overcome it.” - Gail Christmas

Fast Fact

Gail Christmas is the youngest female councillor to have ever been elected to Membertou First Nation.

Gail Christmas always dreamed of becoming a leader. Having struggled with drug and alcohol addictions as a teenager and young adult, that dream seemed impossible. Now, at 28, she’s the youngest female councillor to have ever been elected to Membertou First Nation.

A 2015 Child & Youth Care graduate, Gail was able to make a difference in her life and pursue her dream. She is proudly four years into sobriety and is focused on giving back to her community by being a positive model for youth in Membertou, encouraging them to “never give up on their dreams.”

“I know what it’s like to be in their shoes,” says Gail. “I know how important it is to have someone there to give them words of encouragement and letting them know you care. That’s what really helped me.”

During her studies at NSCC, Gail gained confidence in helping others and discovered a new love of volunteering. “It helped me be more active within my community,” she says. “Not only are you helping others, it makes your soul and spirit feel good too.”

Serving her community

Her commitment did not go unnoticed. In 2014 Gail was named Membertou Citizen of the Year.

“People were proud of me for turning my life around, it caught their eye and their heart,” she says. “I felt very honoured.”

Gail’s drive to give back quickly gained momentum. When she completed her diploma, she decided to return to Membertou and serve her community further by running for council.

“I wanted to prove to people that no matter what you go through in life, you can still overcome it,” she says. “Membertou needs strong people in the community who have gone through hardships, overcome them and are able to give back.”

Membertou Chief Terry Paul agrees. “Gail is a leader. That is why the people in Membertou elected her as councillor,” he says. “She has become a role model to the younger generation in the community.”

“There are so many people who don’t know how to ask for help,” says Gail. “I want to be a voice for all ages, bringing issues and concerns to the table, being there for our people.”
